Purpose:
To work on breaking out of a backpedal into a forward sprint and back while keeping eyes focused on the ball.
Equipment Needed:
- Football(s)
- Lined football field
Instructions:
- Start with the DB lined up on the sideline at the 30 yard line facing out of bounds.
- The first DB will backpedal 4-5 steps straight back on the 30 yard line.
- Break to where the 25 yard line meets the sideline.
- Settle and backpedal 4-5 steps straight back on the 25 yard line.
- Break to where the 20 yard line meets the sideline. Run through sideline.
- Start on the 20 yard line and work back the other way and end on the 30 yard line.
Coaching Tips:
- The DB wants to keep low when backpedaling and have his weight on his toes.
- When breaking forward, the DB wants to keep his feet chopping rather then planting his feet. Again he wants to keep his weight over his feet.
- His eyes should be up and watching where he is breaking to.
- Variations include the coach throwing or rolling the ball to the DB on the last break.
