"W" Footwork Drill
Written by Brian Stier

Purpose:

To work on breaking out of a backpedal into a forward sprint and back while keeping eyes focused on the ball.

Equipment Needed:

  1. Football(s)
  2. Lined football field

Instructions:

  1. Start with the DB lined up on the sideline at the 30 yard line facing out of bounds.
  2. The first DB will backpedal 4-5 steps straight back on the 30 yard line.
  3. Break to where the 25 yard line meets the sideline.
  4. Settle and backpedal 4-5 steps straight back on the 25 yard line.
  5. Break to where the 20 yard line meets the sideline.  Run through sideline.
  6. Start on the 20 yard line and work back the other way and end on the 30 yard line.

Coaching Tips:

  1. The DB wants to keep low when backpedaling and have his weight on his toes.
  2. When breaking forward, the DB wants to keep his feet chopping rather then planting his feet.  Again he wants to keep his weight over his feet.
  3. His eyes should be up and watching where he is breaking to.
  4. Variations include the coach throwing or rolling the ball to the DB on the last break.
